So often we hear of customers who wish to replace a sliding door lock on their own. Despite the fact that we usually do not recommend this, we know that many will still attempt it either way. So in the interest of assisting to get the job done properly, here is a short guide to replace a sliding door lock.

Prior to starting, ensure that the lock actually needs to be replaced. Getting a lock rekeyed may be a quicker and cheaper option that will suit your needs. If you’re unsure, it’s best to contact your local locksmith to find out what will be best for you.

Step 1 – Removing the Handle

Firstly, take a photo of the handle as is prior to doing anything, so that you don’t get confused when putting it back together. Then try and locate any screws that are holding the handle into the door, and remove them all.

Step 2 – Replacing a sliding door lock

After you have taken the door handle apart, you can access the lock. From here, you can either ask your local locksmith to replace the damaged lock, or you can continue your D.I.Y. project! But please note, this option comes with risk due to other variables you must consider. This is not to say it cannot be done, but caution does need to be taken.  Many new sliding door locks will come with instructions on how to replace them.  These steps may vary for each lock so that’s why we stress to take as many photos as you can (just in case you get stuck!)
